When you service motorcycle brakes, choosing the right grease matters just as much as choosing the right brake fluid. Use the wrong product in the wrong place, and you can swell seals, seize pistons, or contaminate pads. Use the right one, and your brakes stay smooth, quiet and reliable for years.

This guide explains exactly which grease to use on motorcycle brake calipers and just as importantly, where not to use it.

✅ 1. Red Rubber Grease – For Seals and Pistons

Where to use it:

  • Caliper pressure seals

  • Caliper dust seals

  • Piston edges during assembly

  • Any area where grease touches EPDM rubber

Why:
Red rubber grease is vegetable-based and rubber-friendly, so it won’t damage EPDM seals (which almost all motorcycle brake calipers use). It helps the seals bed in, prevents twisting, and gives the pistons a smooth, clean movement on first application.

Never substitute it with petroleum grease.
Petroleum-based greases attack EPDM rubber and cause the seals to swell, which is one of the main reasons pistons stick and brakes drag.

NB – It is also acceptable to use brake fluid on pressure and dust seals. Though, please read our guide on ‘Which brake fluid for motorcycle brake systems’ to ensure you get this right.

✅ 2. Slide Pin & Boot Grease – For Sliding Calipers

Where to use it:

  • Floating caliper slide pins

  • Rubber boots that protect the pins

  • Rubberised bushings found on some calipers

What type:
A water-resistant, rubber-safe, high-temperature grease.

This is usually either:

  • Silicone-based slide pin grease

  • A rubber-safe synthetic grease designed specifically for sliding brake components

Why:
Floating calipers need to move freely, but road grit, salt and water gather in the slide pin area. A water-resistant, rubber-compatible grease keeps the pins moving without drying out or turning sticky.

Avoid copper grease here! It’s not rubber-safe and will cause the boots to swell or perish over time.

✅ Copper Grease – For the Back of Brake Pads (Small Amount Only)

Where to use it:

  • On the back of brake pads

  • On pad tabs or contact points

  • On pad pin threads / where pad pins go through caliper casings.

Why:
Copper grease helps stop pad squeal by reducing vibration between the back of the pad and the caliper/piston. It also helps prevent corrosion at the pad’s contact points.

Important:
Use only a tiny amount, and never get copper grease on:

  • Pad friction material

  • Caliper piston bores (It’s ok on the edge where piston meets pads)

  • Rubber components

  • Caliper seals

  • Brake discs

Why not on seals?
Copper grease is usually petroleum-based. Petroleum products cause EPDM brake seals to swell, and once that happens the caliper has to be rebuilt. This is one of the most common mistakes we see in DIY brake servicing.

Greases You Should Never Use on Motorcycle Brake Calipers

  • General-purpose lithium grease

  • Multi-purpose automotive grease

  • Bearing grease

  • Anything described as petroleum- or mineral-based

  • Copper grease on seals or rubber boots

  • Spray lubricants like WD-40 (these destroy rubber incredibly quickly)

If the grease isn’t specifically listed as rubber safe, treat it as unsafe.

Why Using the Right Grease Matters

Choosing the right grease isn’t just about preventing noise – it affects:

  • Caliper lifespan

  • Seal health

  • Piston movement

  • Even brake lever feel

Some of the most common issues we see at Powerhouse come from:

  • Copper grease used on seals

  • Cheap general-purpose grease on slide pins

  • No grease used at all, causing corrosion and binding

Using the correct grease in the correct location avoids those problems entirely.

If Your Pistons Are Already Binding…
